Today, Huobi Global announced that it had agreed to acquire Bitex, a Latin American cryptocurrency exchange, in a confidential deal.
Bitex, which was established in 2014, is active in Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay. A press release from May 26 says that the company will join Huobi Global’s platform but keep its own management and brand.
Bitex’s website says that the Latin American exchange supports at least 15 cryptocurrencies, such as Tether (USDT), DAI, and USD Coin (USDC).
It accepts many fiat currencies, such as the U.S. dollar, the Argentine, Chilean, and Uruguayan pesos, the Paraguayan guaran, and the Peruvian sol.
In a press release, Bitex CEO Francisco Buero said, “Bitex started to protect the value of our users’ money after major financial crises in Latin America.”
“After eight years of running a successful business, we have grown quickly. We think that our partnership with Huobi Global will not only help us grow, but also help us serve our customers better by giving them access to a wider range of digital assets on Huobi Global’s platform.”
The first time Huobi used its brand name in Argentina was in 2019. It gave people there a way to trade Argentine pesos for bitcoin and Tether (USDT).
Last year, it added five methods for Argentine banks, including the big ones Santander Ro and Banco Galicia, to pay for crypto trades.
